Mazandaran
is one of the 30 provinces of Iran which is located in the
north of the country. This province enjoys a colorful
historic background which extends for many centuries. In the
north of the province, there is the Caspian Sea which is the
largest lake in the world. However, a large part of
the province is taken by the Alborz Range with its
magnificent Damavand (5671/m.), leaving only a narrow
coastal strip in the west.

At its narrowest and
most attractive point, the thickly forested northern slopes
of the Alborz roll almost to the sea. Damavand is taken to
be the highest mountain in the Eurasia and the west of
Himalayas. Damavand was considered in the ancient Avestan
texts as the "Center of the Earth". Its reflection in the
vast paddy fields of eastern Mazandaran can be seen from
almost anywhere.
The province of
Mazandaran covers an area of 24091 km2 . It has latitude of
35 - 38 47" and a longitude of 5016 - 5610" .The population
of the province according to the census, is estimated to be
about 2.8 millions.

Mazandaran
with its highly fertile land and many food production
industries and other natural sources (e.g. Oil & Gas) enjoys
a very important position as the food, agriculture and
biotechnology basket of the country as well as an
industrial roll at home. Almost 90% of its land area is
presently under cultivation for rice, wheat, cereals, soy,
cotton, tobacco, sugar- beet and numerous other vegetables.
Beside dairy and canned food products, the main industrial
units of the province are also engaged in the production of
textiles, leather, wood and paper. The province enjoys a
moderate, semitropical climate with an average temperature
of 25 in summer and about 8 in winter. Although snow may
fall heavily in the mountains in winter, it rarely falls
around sea lines. It is the only province in the north
connected to the capital of Iran through the three highways
of "Haraz", "Kandovan" and "Firoozkooh" while Sari,
Nowshahr and Ramsar airports connect it to the other parts
of the country.

It is hoped
that all these amenities will provide a pleasant environment
for Iranian as well as overseas students and researchers
during their stay in the province.
The University of Mazandaran
The University of Mazandaran, with
around 16,000 students in 2007is one of the largest
universities in the I.R. of Iran. There are approximately
13000 undergraduate students and 3000 postgraduate students
within the fourteen academic faculties (for detailed
information please go to:
www.umz.ir):
Higher Education in the
University of Mazandaran
Undergraduate
honors degrees in Mazandaran University are usually four
years in duration. Students are admitted to the academic
faculty where their subject interest is offered. The degrees
are structured to ensure a great deal of flexibility in the
first two years of study, with students only confirming
their major at the end of their second year. (Please note,
this does not apply to professional degrees which follow a
less flexible curriculum). This is distinct from the Persian
system of undergraduate higher education, which is 3 years
in duration, and more specialized from the beginning as
students are admitted to an academic department rather than
faculty.
At postgraduate level, Masters
degrees throughout the I.R. of Iran are two years in
duration, while PhD programs are normally four years in
duration.
An additional benefit of higher
education in the I.R. of Iran is the focus on independent
learning and research. This educational culture is reflected
in the number of contact hours, which you may find to be
slightly lower than your home country, and the expectation
that students will be required to spend a significant
proportion of their time doing independent study outside the
classroom, driven in part by their own academic interests.

We accept international
qualifications from around the world. If Farsi is not your
